Could a LibDem be the "Facebook Faker"?

The controversy over a faked Facebook page in the name of LibDem MP Norman Lamb seems to have the EDP and the blogosphere in a frenzy to discover whodunnit. Several bizarre claims have been made - not least that it was a UKIP plot - but most of the LibDem accusations seem to have been directed towards Tory candidate Trevor Ivory who made a strong denial of being involved or even knowing who did it.

As always in these cases, the LibDems drop big hints without actually pointing the finger (due to, well, no evidence) and the EDP leaves the reader with that no-smoke-without-fire feeling towards Mr Ivory because whoever did do it put a link to Trevor's blog on it.

So, all-in-all, Norman Lamb looks like the innocent hard-working MP and the Tory candidate looks a bit shifty.

And that's what started me thinking. A faked Facebook page attacking Norman Lamb attracts a small readership of Facebook diehards. If they'd left this alone, very few people would ever have cared. But an EDP article suggesting Tory involvment in a smear plot attracts a large readership of floating voters in North Norfolk and from around the county.

Could it be that this albeit rather time-consuming stunt was not designed to besmirch the good name of Norman Lamb MP (as claimed) but to give plenty of sleaze ammunition against the Tory candidate?

After all, who would be stupid enough to leave their own blog details on a site like this which was bound to cause trouble? It just doesn't add up, and with the LibDems being the only winners you have to ask if somebody with a lot of time on their hands and a devious mind could just have dunnit...

Utter rubbish Antony.

Why would we let potentially thousands, millions of people read false and defamatory statements about Norman Lamb on the internet ?

Why would we allow the possibility of people finding out about his opponents blog ?

This is part of the Tory "spin" to rid themselves of any possibility of blame. The fact is that Norman is th einnocent party in all this, but in your typical style you seek to blame the lib Dems. This has to be tryuly the most pathetic thing to do.

Why not simply denounce who ever did it antony rather than making pathetic allegations.

I think digital idently theft will be an even bigger problem in the future.

Keep up the good posting!

Obviously Norfolk Blogger has made his mind up about who he thinks is to blame. One has to wonder why the link was posted to Trevor Ivory's site. Can't believe a Tory was so stupid to do this and i can't think a Lib Dem is that stupid either. Who does that leave.....

Any how i'm off for forty winks!

Norfolk Blogger doth protest too much methinks.

"Why would we let potentially thousands, millions of people read false and defamatory statements about Norman Lamb on the internet?"

The site was nothing of the sort - and you know that the number of people reading the site wouldbe lower than those reading the negative EDP article about Ivory.

"Why would we allow the possibility of people finding out about his opponents blog ?"

Because Ivory's weak link is his pathetic blog. If I were a LibDem, I'd want people to read it. Reminds peopkle about the suicide issue too. Handy!

I don't agree. The Tories denied it, you have no evidence. Antony is just balancing out the arguement.

"Why not simply denounce who ever did it antony rather than making pathetic allegations"

Antony doesn't make allegations. He used a question mark - the same way Norfolk Blogger does all the time. Just because a blog post is called "Are Tories now in favour of slaughtering the first born?" doesn't mean we all don't know what the inference is.

The facts are that we don't know who did this and probably never will. Norfolk Blogger gives evidence it may be Tories, Antony gives evidence it may be LibDems. THere is also a chap somewhere claiming it is UKIP.

Norfolk Blogger - grow up.

Give the Norfolk Blogger a break, he is just doing what Lib Dems do best - happily dishing out the political mud but act holier than thou when it comes back at him.

Oh dear, poor Norfolk Blogger. Exposed in a public former as a complete and utter ... LibDem.

I could have written that reply for him! So obvious and yet so sad.

Bit of a silly conspiracy theory, Antony. Surely it's just a maverick with some kind of grudge?

The obvious answers are sometimes wrong, but not that often.

It is also an amusing irony that you accuse the Lib Dems of pointing the finger with no evidence then go on to, er, point the finger with no evidence. Immature.

I see there's an update at http://tinyurl.com/3ym8xk

Doesn't really support your case, does it Antony?

Well check out Lib Dem Voice and they now have some evidence that destroys your truely awful theory.

Personally I still think it is a tory.

"Trevor Ivory who made a strong denial of being involved"

Would you care to link to that denial? I can't seem to find it.

Hi Tim. It was in the EDP (online) and the EEN (not online). If you search those you will find it.

Good luck hunting!

Ant

Found it. Thank you. Have repeated it here because it's likely to go the way of most individual news stories on local newspaper websites... i.e. into the ether.
