Liz Truss & Trust?

There are 2 things I know about Liz Truss.

One is that she is the newly selected PPC for South West Norfolk, a safe Tory seat, and thus almost certainly the next MP for the constituency.

The second is that a few years back she had an affair with a then-High Flying Tory MP called Mark Field.

I know this because (a) I remember reading about it in the newspaper and (b) I googled all of the finalists for the seat when they were announced and I read about it (again).

If I knew about it ... why did the selectors and members of the South West Norfolk Conservatives not know about it? Does this really constitute a breach of trust? Was she, a highly bright and articulate young woman, really going into the selection to talk about her rather poor taste in men? Does this change the way they think she could do the job of PPC and MP?

I have the highest regard, and I really mean that, for the South West Norfolk Tories. I hope they manage to answer these questions.

Antony,
I think you will find that this woman is all over the place. First she had an affair, now she says she is back with the hubby. Next she was president of OU Lib Dems, now she says she is a true blue Tory. Then she demanded the abolition of the monarchy, now she is an ardent royalist.
-If she says she prefers X Factor, ask her again and it's bound to be Strictly.

Neanderthal

Rubbish Anon; she was a former LibDem, exactly the sort of person we need with us to win the next election. Rank sexism from SW Norfolk I am afraid.

We need libdems to win us the next election? Huh? Well that certainly applies in Norwich South. And talking of same, rank sexism is alive and well there in their choice of PPC - unless of course you are a girl Anthony. We should be told.

Anon No3 I don't understand? I was selected on merit (I hope) from a shortlist of 3 men. I don't know how many women applied. I think Anon. No2 is saying that the Cameron Conservatives ought to be in a position where LibDem voters feel happy voting for us. At least thats what I think (s)he thinks.

I'm no fan of the Tories but it's a bit difficult to claim that the Association is sexist when it chose a woman from 1987 to 2005 and then again last week-or do you mean biased against men? No, what has riled them are the Tory HQ dirty tricks which are now coming out and there is talk that Cameron plans to force deselection of at least one other local ppc and replace them with an a-lister.
In Sw Norfolk you do not need any Lib Dem support to win if you just get out your core vote. But if Cam forces an unwanted ET on them the core will split and you will lose

Again Anon from my reading of the situation please are claiming that SW Norfolk would have treated this situation differently had she been a man having an affair ... I'm not sure myself but then I only really know half a dozen SW Tories.

You say there was a list of three men? Did you say men? How very could you take part in such a sexist exercise? That wouldn't be allowed now. Three women more like. I think John Maples should be informed.

Chloe Smith MP has today come out strongly in support of the SW Norfolk Association and their right to choose the candidate that they want. Will you now also stand up for SW Norfolk Antony?

Antony said...

Not that it is any of my business and they ought not to listen to me, but yes, Conservative Associations should always choose the candidate they want - I am a passionate advocate of "associations rights".

However, let's be clear - they did choose who they wanted, Liz Truss, in a 5 cornered fight with over 50% on the first ballot.

Let's rephrase that - ET got 50% of the vote (allegedly) in the first ballot without any of the people present knowing of the vitally important history of any of the candidates that might have swayed them to make a different choice. Now that they are aware the vote was 14 to 19 to reconsider the matter which is not a ringing endorsement. That's not 50% and I've got a calculator. Thank God for strong decent representatives of the people of Norfolk like Chloe Smith. Stop being naive Antony. You are supposed to be on Norfolk's side.

for god sake i am ashamed to say i was born in norfolk when a woman like liz truss is treated so apallingly.
So what she had an affair 5 years ago. is she supposed to disclose every man she has ever shagged! I dont see the neanderthol of sw norfolk asking that mark field resigns his seat and he was supposed the be her mentor.
She was selected and the selection should stand.
for once anthony i agree with you

Oh dearie me - yet another one misses the point. No-one in SW Norfolk could care less if she had it away with the Brigade of Guards. The question was asked of CCHQ did they know anything that might embarass the Association about any of the candidates and they said no. That is what SWN are annoyed about and would have been if it had been a man, woman, ET or a hamster standing. And Mark Field did lose his seat on the front bench and would not have been selected if he had been at that stage. By the way previous anonymous, if you ever get asked the question about something embarassing in your life I'd own up to your spelling if I were you.
